France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
